Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has joined Mohamed Salah in putting pen to paper on a new two-year deal at Anfield. Despite much speculation over the future of the Reds’ star men, the pair will now remain on Merseyside until 2027.
The Reds are closing in on a second Premier League title and 20th English top-flight trophy overall, with Van Dijk set to be the first Dutchman to captain a league-winning side. Viewed by many as the best defender in world football, it was imperative for Arne Slot’s plans going forward to get a new contract over the line.
Signing on for an extra two seasons at Anfield, Van Dijk’s stay will be extended to nine-and-a-half years in total after making a record-breaking move from Southampton in January 2018. There were fears within the Liverpool fan base that Van Dijk, Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold were all set to leave in the summer, but two of the trio have now renewed their terms.

Van Dijk has been incredible during his second season as the skipper at Anfield, after taking over the role from England midfielder Jordan Henderson in 2023. His presence and composure at the heart of the backline have helped compatriot Slot complete a smooth transition from the Jurgen Klopp era.
Paris Saint-Germain were dubbed as potential suitors for the centre-back if he decided to call time on his Premier League career. However, Richard Hughes secured his second mammoth deal to keep the Netherlands international in England for at least two years. Upon signing his new deal, Van Dijk told Liverpoolfc.com:
“I’m very happy, very proud. There are so many emotions obviously that go through my head right now speaking about it. It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy
“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.”
The welcome news is still largely expected to be followed by confirmation of Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid. Conor Bradley could be handed the reigns to take over the right-back role from the boyhood hero, and will be comforted by the fact Van Dijk will be in the trenches alongside him.
