The Liverpool star had a lot to say about his manager’s comments following the Aston Villa match
In a now deleted social media post, Darwin Nunez made his feelings towards Liverpool fans and Arne Slot clear following his disastrous performance against Aston Villa.
Liverpool’s hopes of claiming the 2025 Premier League title took a blow as they drew 2-2 with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa at Villa Park, making it just one win in four matches for the Reds.
After coming on to replace Diogo Jota shortly after the hour mark, Nunez had the opportunity to seal three points for Liverpool after Dominik Szoboszlai handed him a shot at an open goal, only for the striker to fire the chance over the bar.
The shocking miss has been met with significant backlash from fans online and even led to Liverpool boss Arne Slot calling his player out, but now Nunez has spoken out about the moment.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s massive clash between Liverpool and Manchester City, Slot criticised Nunez for his behaviour following the missed chance, claiming that he allowed the moment to impact his work rate for the final 20 minutes of the match.
But Nunez clearly isn’t happy with his manager’s comments, or the backlash he has received from fans, as he took to his X account to post an official response to the criticism he has received over the performance.
In a now deleted post, the Uruguayan forward claimed that he was unlucky during the game and reminded fans that he was receiving heaps of praise just four weeks ago after coming off of the bench to score two goals to win the match against Brentford.
The post read: “Two three weeks ago, Darwin was the best, Darwin gave us the three points, but yesterday I was unlucky enough to miss a goal and I am once again the “worst” and the failure. I don’t fall, I get up and I’m never going to give up. I’m going to give it my all until the last day I have to be in Liverpool. Resilience!”
It read: “I wasn’t the best three weeks ago, and I’m not the worst now. If I fall, I get up. You’ll never see me give up. I’m going to give it my all until the last day I’m here in Liverpool. Resilience!”
After seeing some of the initial reaction to the post, the 25-year-old removed his comments about being unlucky and being branded “the worst” and the failure”
He also altered the wording of part of his statement, changing “until the last day I have to be in Liverpool” to “until the last day I’m here in Liverpool,” after some fans pointed out that it could point to his eagerness to leave the club in the summer, amid interest from the Saudi Pro League.
