Liverpool were awarded a second penalty of the game against Wolves only for VAR to overturn the decision
Liverpool saw their second-half penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers overturned after it was ruled Emmanuel Agbadou had not made any contact on Diogo Jota.
Jota went down with the score at 2-0 in the second half at Anfield but after a penalty was awarded by referee Simon Hooper, the official was then advised to take a look at the pitch-side monitor.
After checking the replays, Hooper overturned the initial call meaning no penalty was awarded, although Agbadou was forced off with an injury for his challenge on the Reds striker.
A Premier League statement has now revealed why the spot kick was not given.
The @PLMatchCentre account, which explains VAR calls in detail online in real time, posted: “VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Liverpool for a challenge by Agbadou on Jota and deemed any contact was not initiated by Agbadou, therefore recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”
Luis Diaz opened the scoring in the first half before a Mohamed Salah penalty doubled the advantage after Diaz had been fouled by goalkeeper Jose Sa.
Salah then had a second goal ruled out in the second half for offside before the overturned penalty. Matheus Cunha fired a goal back for the visitors at Anfield to make it 2-1.
