Four red cards were shown after the final whistle following James Tarkowski’s dramatic late equaliser in the Merseyside derby
The Premier League have clarified the red cards show to Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure after the final whistle of the 2-2 Merseyside derby draw between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park.
James Tarkowski’s goal in the 98th minute sparked wild scenes at Goodison and Doucoure was seen racing to celebrate in front of the Liverpool supporters at the final whistle, sparking Jones’ angry reaction.
A number of players would pile in to separate the pair and both Liverpool boss Arne Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff were subsequently shown red cards by referee Michael Oliver in the ensuing scenes.
A Premier League statement failed to clarify the seasons for the red cards. It said: “The referee issued second yellow cards and red cards to Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure following an altercation after the final whistle. Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also shown straight red cards after the final whistle.”
Liverpool complained about the equalising goal from Tarkowski after offside claims against Doucoure and accusations of a foul from Beto on Ibrahima Konate.
The Premier League clarified that Doucoure was indeed onside in rhe build-up to the goal but did not release any statement on the claims of a foul.
A statement read: “The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR- who established that Doucouré was in an onside position in the build-up.”
Beto had given Everton an early lead in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park before Alexis Mac Allister’s quick equaliser before Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool a late lead. Tarkowski would equalise late into injury time to spark wild scenes.
