Liverpool have been knocked out of the Champions League after taking Paris Saint-Germain to penalties in the Round of 16
Jamie Carragher claimed he thought Liverpool would beat Paris Saint-Germain comfortably after their 4-1 penalty shootout defeat at Anfield. The Champions League Last 16 tie went to extra-time and penalties after ending 1-1 on aggregate.
Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal in normal time to put matters level. Despite Liverpool’s best efforts throughout, they were unable to overcome Italian keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“Well, I’m pretty much the say [doesn’t know what to say] at the moment really,” Carragher said. “Bit deflated but listen, the best team won. PSG, we’ve seen how they performed in the first leg, I called it a robbery to make it 1-0 and I think in this game, in the sort of 20 minutes, half an hour, I felt that Liverpool were going to go and win this game comfortably
“And they just couldn’t get that goal early on, had two or three chances, then PSG get their goal. For the rest of the game, it felt like nip and tuck really, but then in extra-time it just felt like PSG took over. Where I was in the Kop, we were just hanging on for penalties and desperate for penalties, really. It’s a lottery, anything can happen.”
Meanwhile, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reflected on the win, saying: “I think it’s one of the best, if not the best [moments] to be honest. To win against Liverpool, the best club today in Europe, they finished first in the group stage and the Premier League leader, I think it’s something really special.”
