Liverpool face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in a key Premier League clash
The Premier League have clarified the decision to disallow Curtis Jones’ goal during Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Jones netted after Dominik Szoboszlai ran through on goal and squared it to him to tap in to an empty net.
The goal was celebrated wildly in the away end with Liverpool having already enjoyed a 2-0 lead through goals from Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah.
Bit despite a tight call, Szoboszlai appeared to be just offside when running through on goal and the strike was chalked off by Anthony Taylor.
The Premier League tweeted: “VAR recommended that Liverpool’s goal was disallowed as Szoboszlai was in an offside position in the build-up.”
A victory will put Liverpool 11 points ahead of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table with just 11 games to go, although Arne Slot’s side will have played a game more. The Gunners lost 1-0 at home to West Ham United on Saturday as they failed to close the gap on the Reds.
City went into the game a full 17 points behind Liverpool after a turbulent season, with Pep Guardiola’s men left fighting for a Champions League place.
