Robbie Fowler says it’s time for Darwin Nunez to accept an impact role at Liverpool in the same way Divock Origi successfully did during his time at Anfield. And the Reds legend admits he could understand if Trent Alexander-Arnold did seek a move to Real Madrid at the end of his contract this term.
Nunez has scored just six goals for the Reds this term across all competitions and has struggled to nail down a starting spot as Arne Slot’s No.9 during a period where Diogo Jota hadn’t started a Premier League game for four months prior to Sunday’s 2-1 win over Wolves.
The Uruguay striker was tentatively linked with a move away from the club in the January transfer window but Liverpool had no intention of listening to offers at the midway point of a campaign that saw them well placed in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Origi, whose heroics in the Champions League semi-final and Madrid showpiece itself in 2019 went a long way towards the club lifting their sixth European Cup, left Anfield in 2022 after winning six trophies with the Reds, including the Premier League title in 2020.
During the Belgian striker’s time under Jurgen Klopp, Origi developed a reputation as someone who could change the course of a game from the bench and speaking to BoyleSports – who offer the latest Premier League odds – Fowler thinks Nunez can adopt a similar status in Slot’s squad going forward.
“Darwin Nunez could be the next Divock Origi when it comes to scoring big goals at big moments, as a Liverpool fan I’d love to see that,” Fowler said.
“If he can get his head around being an impact player then he can adjust to that and it will become easier for him to perform in those moments when he is needed
Origi wasn’t a regular but when it mattered he stood up to be counted and look how he is remembered now by fans. Nunez can make a real case for himself and there is a reason he gets called captain chaos, he can be a real handful as Liverpool look to win the major trophies.”
