Alexis Mac Allister wants to stay at Liverpool for many more years to come as he talks about the club’s clear ambition to win trophies
Alexis Mac Allister has explained how Liverpool have exceeded expectations this season as he declared himself happy to stay at Anfield for “many, many more years to come”. Mac Allister has been an integral part of a Reds team which, under new boss Arne Slot, sits seven points clear at the Premier League summit, are into the League Cup final and have progressed to the last 16 of the Champions League.
The Argentina World Cup winner, who scored his fourth goal of the campaign in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Wednesday, has previously been linked with interest from European Super League advocates Real Madrid.
But the 26-year-old midfielder believes he can realise his ambitions at Liverpool as he underlined his desire for silverware at Anfield.
Nobody would have expected us to be in this position before the season,” said Mac Allister. “Ambition is one of the most important things, and this team has it. It doesn’t matter how you play, whether you play well or bad, this team wants to win and that makes everything really easy.
It’s a really special club. When you are at a big club, normally there are a lot of egos or that kind of thing. But in this club everyone can see the unity and connection. I’m really, really happy to be here and hopefully (I have) many, many more years to come
After the World Cup I realised how good it feels to win something like that. For me it was the proudest moment of my career so far and I want to feel that again. I know if I win the Premier League or Champions League I will feel it again. That’s why I am here. That’s why I feel this team has the ambition to win those kind of things.”
Of the impact made by Slot since replacing Jurgen Klopp last summer, Mac Allister added: “There is an idea and everyone can see it. We all have to co-operate to get to that idea and I think we are still in that transition. He is a really good manager, speaks a lot to the players and is ready to improve what we don’t do well during the games.”
Mac Allister was talking on the latest edition of The Reds Roundtable on LFC TV, which also includes Diogo Jota and Ibrahima Konate. And Jota has also spoken about the changes implemented by Slot
From the very first moment we saw him, (we could see) how clear he was with his ideas and how clear he was for individuals, saying ‘this is what I want from you’,” said the forward. “For example in my case, he said ‘I see you more as a striker than playing on the wing’ as I did in previous years. So you knew this is what he wants from me, and this is what I need to do. It was a clear message.”
Konate, meanwhile, outlined the sacrifices and laser-like focus the Liverpool squad are going to need if they are to realise their aims for the season.
For me, to win a game is not enough,” said the centre-back. “It’s really to win something at the end (of the season). I won the first trophy of my career at Liverpool (in 2022) and the feeling to win a trophy, how you celebrate with the fans and the players, this love and feeling, you really want this every season.
You want to work very hard because you can win games and do a lot of things and you suffer every day for that, but at the end, if you win something it will be more beautiful.
It’s hard to keep this mentality because maybe you are tired or you have some problem in your private life. (It’s difficult) Just to switch and go ‘okay I am in football, I have to be focused’ and go again and again and again, especially now as we have so many games to play, sometimes every three days
It’s not easy for everyone. That’s why I am very happy to play for Liverpool because when I wake up and go to the training ground, I am very happy to be with these people. It helps a lot.”
