Both Everton and Liverpool had players sent off after a dramatic end to the Merseyside derby saw the points shared at Goodison Park
The Premier League has confirmed that four players and coaching staff were sent off during a dramatic finale to Everton’s Merseyside derby draw against Liverpool. League leaders Liverpool looked set to move nine points clear at the top of the table when Mohamed Salah fired home on 73 minutes.
However, the Blues rescued a point deep into stoppage time when James Tarkowski fired home a sensational strike to level matters. The goal was shrouded in controversy after the away side appealed that there was an offside and foul in the build-up to the equaliser.
After a lengthy VAR check, the goal stood but that was not the end of the drama. At the full-time whistle, Abdoulaye Doucoure decided to celebrate in front of the Liverpool fans which sparked an angry response from Curtis Jones who physically confronted the midfielder, leading to both sets of players trying to separate them.
Once that incident was defused, another began as Liverpool manager Arne Slot had a heated confrontation with Michael Oliver. With confusion rife, the Premier League has confirmed exactly who was sent off after the melee.
“The referee issued second yellow cards and red cards to Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure following an altercation after the final whistle,” the Premier League Match Centre confirmed on X. “Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also shown straight red cards after the final whistle.”
Jones and Doucoure will both serve one-match bans for their dismissals unless the Premier League sees fit to extend those suspensions after reviewing the footage. Slot and Hulshoff shall also receive one-match bans unless the reason for their dismissals is deemed to be severe enough for further action to take place.
Everton manager David Moyes told the BBC: “I thought the referee refereed the game well, he didn’t get involved with every challenge. I think that it was a bit of an old fashioned game.”
